SIT DOWN: BRENDAN BOYD OF SOCIETY ORIGINAL PRODUCTS
Brendan was on the West Coast to take care of business and hang with friends. He had a break in his busy schedule to meet up and discuss the current state and future of Society Original Products.
Can you give us a little bit of background behind Society Original Products?
My partner Marcel Angol and I started selling Society t-shirts in 2007 with the aspirations of becoming a full clothing line. We produce clean clothing that appeals to a wide range of customers. A kid that is sixteen and a gentleman in his mid to late thirties can both find something they like from Society.
The brand is primarily based on our lifestyle and experiences. Marcel and I grew up in Boston and wanted to express our lifestyle through clothing. When you think about it, Boston doesn't really have a fashion scene and the closest city with one would be New York, so we wanted to bring this to Boston.
One of our slogans is "we want to win". The brand is about defining yourself, and doing what makes you happy. "Think Positive, Make your own rules, define your own dreams".
The main logo, "Society" printed backwards, means something different to everyone who sees it, but a simple way to define it is, "society is backwards because Society is backwards". The bike icon logo represents positive thinking and forward movement.
How did you get into the fashion industry?
I have always been into style and fashion. I met Marcel through a mutual friend and he already had a T-shirt line under the name "Marcel Angol Brand Clothing". His background is in illustration and graphic design. He was working some jobs and screening tees on his own. Ultimately we shared the same goals and ideals, which led us to becoming partners and building the brand. We worked on it for a year before we eventually both quit our jobs to work on Society full time.
One of Society's trademark details is the sideway pockets on your outerwear. How did you come up with the idea to do that?
We call those ninja pockets. Society is all about doing things our own way. We like taking what is already there and putting our own twist on it to create a trademark for our brand. Kind of like the origin of hip hop and how it evolved from rock and pop music. Artists just flipped those types of music to make a new sound. There are certain details that we wanted to do that people know right away is a Society piece.
Where do you guys get your inspiration?
Marcel is the creative director and visionary of the brand, I handle the marketing and the sales management end. Like myself, he gets inspiration from everyday living: music, movies, women, comedy, reading -- you know the little things in life that people overlook. Fashion wise he's inspired from fashion overseas in the UK and Asia. Traveling is huge. We try not to pay attention to what other brands in or outside our genre are doing; we do what is authentic to us.
What's your biggest accomplishment?
For myself I see things as checkpoints, nothing is bigger than the next. Being inside of the brand when we reach a certain goal, I am thinking about what is the next thing we need to do.
Some definite highlights are the clientele and relationships we have built. Artists like Kidz in the Hall, J. Cole, Wiz Khalifa, and Kendrick Lamar wear our brand. We are also dropping a collab BMX with DK bikes, which is dope. I always get excited to see our brand in retail shops. Just seeing how our brand has reached so many places around the world is incredible.
What are you working on next?
We have a new tee and tank capsule collection dropping for Summer, along with new hats for Fall and Holiday are on the way too. Our online shop and the DK BMX bike collab are also dropping this July. We also designed some high school uniforms for a school in Boston. Women's pieces are coming back, so keep your eye out for that. Plus we have a bunch of secret projects as well. Oh yeah, and we are working with some BMX riders too.
I know that the bike is a prominent logo for the brand, but have you always been into BMX?
Yeah, Marcel and I rode BMXs growing up. In Boston there are a ton of kids that BMX and we can be the brand that supports them. Although it is important to mention that we are not a bike company nor do we sell bike products, we are a men's sportswear clothing company. But to simply put it, bikes make us happy so we put bikes on everything.
Many top brands are opening up retail shops these days to connect with their customers. Do you see Society going down that path in the future?
We have always had interest in opening a brick and mortar, but there is no real rush for us to start that. The real focus right now is our online business. We are going to treat that as our retail shop. To us this is almost better than a brick and mortar because it is opened 24 hours a day, there is less overhead and people will be able to shop from all over the world.
Stepping outside of the box, what would be a dream collaboration?
A couple dream collaborations starting with footwear would be Vans and Converse. I have admired these two brands because both are so classic. There is no age for these shoes because they are timeless. For apparel, Levis would be dope, maybe denim jeans or a denim jacket. I also love video games; a Society and Xbox collab would be ill. I liked the collab that LRG did with Suzuki and since I ride bikes, something like that would be cool. Definitely more BMX or sports activity collabs, but the ultimate, ultimate collab would be with BMW. I have been driving BMWs since I was 19 and I can't imagine driving anything else.
What do you think of the current state of fashion right now?
As for America, I think there is too much co signage. It has to be on this person, in this movie, in this commercial, or on this blog before people take a chance on it. I enjoy what Orisue and IMKing are doing. VGB is coming up. I have been a fan of WeSC and Ralph Lauren. LRG is good and 10 Deep has been consistent, but in America you see a lot of the same thing. Internationally is where it's at. People aren't afraid to take a chance and dress how they feel. They try new colors and fabrications.
What's one trend that you want to see die?
I have never been a fan of the raccoon tail people hook to their back belt loop. That shit is over. Another one is when people wear coin pouches in the front. And one more I really, really don't like is when people get the expensive belts with matching shoes. Like people who buy the monogram LV belt to show that it is LV and then buy the matching shoes. That is terrible.
Given the state of the economy, how do you plan to continue to grow the brand?
We started Society during the recession and have been able to grow through that. As long as we grow steady, control our distribution, and develop our online shop we should be fine.
What advice would you give someone that wants to start a brand?
First thing is to save your money. Second, keep your credit intact, because it can open a lot of doors for you. Do as many internships as possible. Don't rush to come up with your brand. Too many people try to rush and get their brand out there, but in reality there is no real timetable to roll out a company. The more prepared you are when you roll out your company the better chance you have to succeed. Also don't be afraid to make mistakes because that is part of growing.
Lightning Round
What would your last meal be?
It would be some sort of Italian dish, probably spaghetti because I love spaghetti, with carrot juice.
If you could have coffee with someone dead or alive, who would it be?
It would be Jay-Z. I don't normally drink coffee, but if that was my excuse for meeting him, I am drinking coffee. I would ask him about when he started his company and get pointers on how to build a successful business.
If you could hop on a plane right now, where would you go?
Hawaii.
What's on your iPod right now?
The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, Thurzday, Gilbere Forte, The Kid Daytona, J. Ferb, and The Dream.
If your house was on fire and you could only take 3 things with you, what would you grab?
Got to be some Society man. My Society jacket, pants, and t-shirt.
What's your favorite piece of clothing you own?
My Society sweatshorts.
And to wrap it all up, something you can't live without?
Music. It's the foundation of who I am.

CLIP: Warriors of Radness - The Marina Del Rey Collection
This is a small capsule collection influenced by the titillating ostentatious tenacity and affluent lifestyle associated with the largest small craft harbor in the world: Marina Del Rey, located in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles, California.
For the premiere of this collection Jack Coleman put together a little 8mm film with WOR's main man and undercover gigolo Kyle Robbins aka "Cairo". After a hyper adrenaline morning of whipping and whapping lefts and rights (mostly rights) on a 5'10" INT soft top fish, Cairo breezes over to the Marina for late breakfast Mimosas and soft boiled eggs at Jer-ne in the Ritz Carlton. You see the Jer-ne is like his office. The afternoon is spent making business calls, nurturing connections, and planning his schedule for a frolic fun evening with the clientele, all expenses paid. Perhaps a Rolex thrown in for a job well done? Touché Cairo, Touché!
Cairo is seen wearing the latest from the Marina Del Rey collection. Cuffed shorts and cargo muscle pants in cotton linens, breezy fine weight cotton t shirts and tank tops, linen pullovers for when the wind turns onshore, striped cotton shorts, and nylon easy to wear trunks.
